What a nice way to start your weekend! Ice cream at a great store!
Described as the “simple chic….new kid on the block” this East Village gelateria was slipped into an unassuming central location right off St Marks place on Second Avenue, NYC. This is a new brand development for a family affair gelato business. The Greek – South African clients have transferred their unique life perspective into flavors and the space and brand had to echo, reveal and enhance this experience. The added choice of the US market as the launching pad required a study of the cultural identifiers that could merge with the new flavors. A project from Nicholas Karytinos also known for his concept construction projects, presented at decor8 before.
The beach hut blended with the urban boardwalk to make up a space where a cool summer breeze can be imagined all year long. The lighting creates the effect of sunlight above and around the hut. The concrete floor is reminiscent of sand and the white-wash seating and surfaces blend with the stained and lightly distressed white oak. Salvaged Coney Island boardwalk wood was used to create the boardwalk seating of floating benches.
The gelato is not presented at entry in order to enhance the experience. The bright gelato colors are concealed ….to be discovered enhancing the anticipation for the new secret flavor being revealed. The relaxing location is an oasis of cool calm in the city.
BE INSPIRED AND HAVE A SWEET WEEKEND!
